Budget adjustable fuel pressure regulator
« on: April 28, 2015, 11:54:09 PM »
Ok so this is the first write up I have ever done and it's on something I did roughly 3 years ago so bear with me.

First I am not responsible if you do something wrong and burn your car to the ground. If you are not completely confident with working on a fuel system do not attempt this.

Parts needed are:
90-93 5sfe fuel rail
Honda D series fuel pressure regulator (92-2000 civic and del sol)
Longer fuel return line
Blox or skunk2 adjustable diaphragm

Tools:
12 mm wrench or socket
10 mm wrench or socket
Hack saw or  high speed cut off wheel
File or something to debur the cut edge

I don't have pictures yet but they will be added later. I'm not going to go through the entire process of getting the fuel rail off because if you are doing this you should know what you are getting into.

First thing you will notice when you have the regulators side by side is that the 5s regulator has a small stem with the o-ring on it, and the Honda regulator is flat with a larger o-ring.  The bolt hole spacing and diameter is the same for both regulators. The blox adjustable diaphragm will not fit on the 5s regulator because the diameter is too big, and I didn't feel comfortable grinding the regulator or milling the blox diaphragm.

I believe the directions for the regulator install is to cut 1/4 inch above the flange but don't cut straight through cut around it. Now you need to debur the edge that you cut since an o-ring has to slide over it and you don't want to damage or tare it. Now slide the top of the diaphragm over the now cut regulator and put the bottom section of the blox piece under the flange. Tighten the 4 bolts to spec. Make sure to use a new o-ring on the regulator to ensure no leaks. Now make sure the return section is pointing  back towards the return line for the car and bolt it down to the torque specs. Make sure to put a gauge on it after it is on the car and check the pressure setting and check for no leaks prior to starting the car.

As a side note for those using 5s rail on a boosted motor might want to consider using an AEM bolt on regulator as I have heard that the blox and others like it may have air leaks under boost pressure.

If boost is your forte and you're worried about it leaking like mentioned this does open up all other D series FPR's that aren't as cheap but are bolt on as well.
