Bolt in 2grfe swap into a 5th gen celica.
« on: December 04, 2016, 11:56:14 PM »
Here it is, the 2GR-FE 5th gen swap!

First I'd like to give a big thanks to Marc at Frankenstein motorworks and Doug at wire gap. Their flexibility, knowledge and products made this swap possible.
(http://frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com, wiregap.com/)

Let's get started.

**Transmission**
2grfe bolts to E series transmissions and S series transmissions.
One bolt hole needs to be tapped for an m12.
Take a carbide bur to clearance two nubs on the block/oil pan

The hex head screws needed are:
2X M12-1.25x55mm
1X M12-1.25x70mm
1X M10-1.25x40mm

I prefer over building everything so each of these is at least grade 10.9 or better but you can pick as you wish.
I sourced these from eBay but fastenal has a wonderful supply of hardware as well.
https://www.fastenal.com/products;jsessionid=SYADRUFV4hKi+H0pPi9eB31L.38536438-9c19-3947-9017-bf77ad0514fd?r=~categoryl1:%22600000%20Fasteners%22|~

**Clutch and flywheel**
The flywheel needed is for a 1MZ-FE I sourced this from Monkey Wrench Racing.
PN: FEC-130881
https://monkeywrenchracing.com/product/fidanza-flywheel-toyota-2gr-fe-1mz-fe/

While you're at Monkey Wrench Racing grab some ARP flywheel screws.
Since all 2gr's in Toyota/lexus vehicles are automatic backed you cannot reuse the flexplate screws
PN: MWR-108008
https://monkeywrenchracing.com/product/mwr-arp-bolt-set-8-toyota-1zz2zz2gr2zr-flywheel/

Any standard 3S-GTE/1MZ-FE clutch will work(if you have an E series, S series require a hybrid clutch. You can figure out what that is), be aware that this swap usually doesn't net much less than 250hp so buy a clutch accordingly. I prefer southbend.
http://www.southbendclutch.com

(Ideally the S series should be usable but the axle support and clutch will need to be custom)

**Axle shafts**
For the E series the long stub needs to be modified (shift over the point where the bearing sits by cutting a new grove for the snap ring and adding a spacer and Marc at Frankenstein motorworks offers that service.
http://frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/2gr-fe-e153-axle-stub-modification-service
If you need an axle stub they are typically in 88-91 camry v6 and es250's (yes even autos)
If you are using a factory viscous LSD from an mr2 (e153) or st215 fwd turbo (e56) youíll need to cut down the taper on the two splines areas (I can provide information on this if needed)

The bearing support from a 2GR-FE equipped avalon can be used, they can be sourced from Toyota directly.
PN: 43457-07010
The dowels are already there, you just need the hardware.
3X M10-1.25x35mm
As stated before, I go overboard on everything so these were grade 10.9 or better, also they are available through Fastenal.
https://www.fastenal.com/products;jsessionid=SYADRUFV4hKi+H0pPi9eB31L.38536438-9c19-3947-9017-bf77ad0514fd?r=~|categoryl1:%22600000%20Fasteners%22|~

**Engine Mounting**
I have developed an engine mount using mustang control arm bushings as bushings for it.

If you need a passenger side engine mount send me a PM.

The transmission has 3 mounts, use what makes the transmission you have to the chassis. (I plan to develop a stainless steel rear mount that deletes the crossmember if I sell enough other parts)

**Fuel System**
Fuel pump: AEM 320L/Hr pump. PN: 50-1000
https://m.summitracing.com/parts/avm-50-1000

The 2GR-FE is a returnless style fuel system and the 5g celica is a return style
Using an aftermarket adjustable fuel pressure regulator (FPR) run the return to the bottom of it.
I will probably retain the fuel line from the rear of the car to the filter in the engine bay but make new line from the filter to the FPR and rails.

The FPR I chose was from aeromotive
PN: 13129
https://m.summitracing.com/parts/aei-13129
Gauge
PN: 650340
https://m.summitracing.com/parts/rus-650340

I used a series of Army Navy (AN) fittings.

In the process I found it helps to have an aftermarket fuel rail because of the angle the stock rail puts the inlet at it makes using the rear o2 sensor bracket as a fuel pressure regulator bracket hard to do.

I purchased the radium engineering rails without the rest of the parts and ordered parts from summit to match.
PN 20-0198

PNís for AN fittings and line to mesh everything. Mount provided bracket to the Rear bank O2 sensor holding bracket
1x 220167B
2x 220887B
1x 220831B
1x AN2008B5 (-8AN 5ft but you only need 6Ē roughly)
2x 220165B
1x 640913
2x AN920-06-06B
1x 21006
1x AN2006B5 (-6AN 5ft but roughly 1.5ft needed)
2x 220687B

Return line (should be able to push the -4AN line over the factory fuel return line, itís low pressure so a clamp on it should be adequate)
1x 11954R (-4AN 2ft roughly 1ft needed)
1x 16822
1x 220487B

212cc Uni 5/16Ē crankcase breather for gas tank breather (when you remove the charcoal canister there needs to be a filter)

**Pedal Mount**
The 2grfe uses a fly by wire setup meaning it does not have a cable connecting the gas pedal to the throttle.

I will offer the mount to anyone interested (made 9 spares)

**Power Steering**
I converted mine using a Volvo electric pump mounted in the driver side area under where the battery once was with a reservoir above it. You can also delete the stock pump and cap the lines. I have not tired to adapt the factory mechanical pump.

If thereís interest I can develop a stainless steel mount bracket for the Volvo pump.

For non-power steering non-AC systems use Dayco belt PN 5070579

**Mass Air Flow Sensor**
Im using a regular maf sensor
PN:

unfortunately the specter part wasnít a direct swap so I printed an adapter (yet to use it) Iíll document it when I start the car.

**Wiring Harness**
I sent my harness to Doug at wiregap.com

**ECU**
the stock ecu in most 2grfeís have immobilizers tied to the key, it removes your ability to put the engine in other cars.
Marc at Frankenstein motorworks cracked the ecu and came up with a way to eliminate the immobilizer and CEL (for not having an automatic transmission), at the same time he bumped the rev limit to 7200 and kept the cams phased up to redline(some have a more limited time depending on their application)

This is one of the few pieces I still need to order but you can find it here
5 plug:
http://frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/7ggctx2d3nouxvosfq5676nqfb0vew
2 plug:
http://frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/modified-2-plug-2gr-fe-ecu-2010-and-earlier-rav4

**Exhaust**

Headers/manifolds: Frankenstein motorworks stainless steel headers.
http://frankensteinmotorworks.squarespace.com/shop/headers
You could try using factory headers but I didnít need the cats and decided the aftermarket ones were worth the money.

"Downpipe": I decided to make my own. If it works out Iíll try developing a stainless version. I may offer that although itís easy enough for a shop to do.

Extras:
Steering rack strap: I found that the frankenstein headers put the middle tube right where the steering rack strap was. I developed a bracket and a strap to move them inboard to clear the header tube. Testing the final concept soon.
I will have 9 pairs to sell in case anyone is interested.

Radiator: the stock radiator ends up very close to the alternator, to avoid issues I made brackets to fit a civic radiator (super cheap and available everywhere)

I have 9 extra pairs to sell in case someone needed some

was this swap ever finished?  still in process?  rav4 mount will be easier to use with a few mods.

No not yet, I need to get my z and my Oldsmobile running so I have space to work on this car.

This mount is bolt in for gt/gts/alltrac unlike the rest of them.

**Updates**

Mr2 2gr mount fits but does not work appropriately. The engine sits about 3Ē too high on the passenger side.

The alternator sits very close to the stock radiator and an AC compressor doesnít appear as though it would fit.

The rear header hits the strap for the steering rack.

Each of these things Iím working on parts to overcome them.

The engine mount is halfway designed. First test fit I have the bolt pattern correct but Iím not clearing all the parts of the engine.

The strap for the rack will enter the design phase soon.

The radiator I chose was a 3 core civic one because Iíve seen another celica using that radiator without stated issues and civics seem to get along fine with them as well, I will design mounts for that as well.

Things that arenít exactly required but help to add a good touch to it is the throttle cable hole plug and the 184 to E series cable mount are being designed as we speak as well.

If anyoneís interested in parts Iím developing to make this swap happen let me know.

Passenger side motor mount design.

Fuel rails (allows me to clock the inlet toward the FPR, if you used stock ones one would have to find an appropriate line size, I think -5an if thatís available, and use -4an from the filter to the FPR)

Exhaust mock up.
Wonít be as good as equal length setups but itís temporary.

Some updates:

Developed mounts for a civic radiator and relocation brackets for the steering rack strap that was interfering with the rear header.

I have 9 of each available for sale if anyone were to try to replicate this. They are laser cut stainless steel.

Attached a parts list with prices.

No expense spared, so if youíre on a budget you can save a good chunk of cash by using factory manifolds and a factory 1mz flywheel and factory spec 3sgte clutch etc

Ahhh here it is!
This is interesting, have you had to move the engine any direction to clear interference from anything? It seems like you moved everything around it instead?
How does it fare with regards to the subframe clearance?
My 6 had to have mine modified, but I believe the 5 has a different subframe setup?

It was easier to move the extra parts rather than move the engine since the trans would have to get moved as well and then play with axle placement etc.

I wanted a clean install that others can replicate (Iíve produced 10 of everything except the engine mount to sell) this.

Thereís a lot of corners to be cut if one wanted to do so and the parts may fit other cars/car builds with other motives (big turbo mounted in the grill etc)

The exhaust is 2Ē to 2.25 for now.
Iíll switch to 3Ē at some point. Maybe keep it dual all the way out.
